Result: Sin
Giving into temptation always results in sin. We reject Godâs Word in some sort of way. In Eveâs world, sin was unheard of. No one had ever sinned against God. When sin entered the world for the very first time, death entered the picture as well. âSin when it is fully grown brings forth deathâ (James 1:15). No longer would Adam and Eve live in perfect bodies. They would eventually die, and the entire world now follows in their footsteps.
Dan Armstrong writes, âNow, we know the wages of sin is death in an ultimate senseâthis is the consequence of sin God warned us about long ago before our first parents sinned in Eden. But in the Bible, death isnât merely the final stop of life. Itâs a word used to describe the whole process of decay and misery that results from sin.â5
Think about what happens after you indulge in lust. Does that action bring you life? Does it satisfy you long term? Does it quench your ultimate desire for peace and joy? It might for a fleeting moment, but it doesnât ultimately satisfy. It canât. Instead, it does the opposite. It leaves you worse off than you were before. It leaves you feeling broken, depressed, alone, guilty, ashamed, and wishing you had never given in.
Itâs crucial to remember that temptation never shows us the end resultâsin and consequencesâwhen it first presents itself. If it did, weâd never give in. Weâd avoid it and run away. Instead, temptation is always wrapped in an enticing covering of lies. Itâs sneaky, deceptive, and filled with promises it canât keep. When we understand the result of giving into temptation, it should give us a whole lot more pause. It should cause us to consider the end result.
Instead of focusing on the momentary pleasures temptation offers us, we must be vigilant to think through all three steps in the process. Letâs remember what happens as a result of giving into temptation. If weâre willing to consider the full process and honestly acknowledge the result of sin, temptation will become easier to spot and avoid.
